A Hint of Pentecost
Rev. Stephanie Bekhor of Arizona tells aboutfamily
gatherings in her grandparents’ home. Her
paternal grandmother had Iranian roots and spokeFarsi,
Arabic, French and English. Her grandfatherknew
Hebrew, read from the Hebrew Old Testament and then
led prayers in that language. Her Uncle Ed spoke
Arabic and Farsi interchangeably. His wife spoke
English but could grasp the essence of what others
were communicating. Her Aunt Louise told jokes in
French. Few of them understood French, but
everyone laughed at the punch lines.
