Your life’s theme

When Winston Churchill once dined at a prestigious London
restaurant, he asked the waiter to return to the kitchen the soup he had
tasted. “It has no theme,” Churchill complained.
A truly good soup will have a theme. That is true also for a good
book, a good concert, a good film, a good sermon, a good work of art …
whatever.
It is also true of a good life. Joan of Arc, the French martyr, said,
“God must be served first.” That was her theme. St. Paul told the
Corinthians that he desired to know nothing among them except Jesus
Christ (1 Corinthians 2:2). That was his theme. It does seem that every
truly dedicated Christian has an overriding theme. And that prompts us
to ask what ours should be.
A pastor/psychologist, Dr. Curtis Nigh, puts this challenge to us:
“If the heart does not have a noble or Godly theme, then it develops an
anti-theme.” To be a Christian is to have a compelling Godly theme. It
goes with the territory.
