St. Mary the Virgin Episcopal Church in Big Spring, Texas, will celebrate its 140th parish anniversary and the new ministry of its priest and rector, Father Christopher Simpson, on Thursday, November 6, 2025, at 6:00 PM. Bishop Scott Mayer and regional diocesan clergy will attend.
Parish History Highlights:
- 1885: Bishop Garrett conducted the first service in a school in March; the church was formally organized in November following a land donation.
- 1897–1900: The first structure was destroyed by a tornado in 1897; a rebuilt church was consecrated in July 1900.
- 1935: Attained parish status.
- 1950s–1966: To accommodate post-war growth, a monastery-inspired campus was designed by architect Harwell Hamilton Harris. The Nave was dedicated on August 7, 1966.
- 1960–2001: St. Mary's Episcopal School operated programs for local children.
- 1970s–2013: Founded and sponsored Canterbury Retirement Homes to provide affordable housing.
- Present: Led by the Rev. Dr. Christopher Simpson, former theology professor and rector from Lincoln, Illinois.
